Special Event: An English Country Dance Party!
Culver City English Country Dance is thrilled to announce a special Dance Party during the 4th of July weekend:
An English Country Dance Party!
Guest caller and choreographer Bob Green joins us from St. Louis, Missouri, along with live music by Oklahoma band Ladies at Play: Shanda McDonald, fiddle and accordion; Kathy Dagg, guitar, mandolin, and banjo; and Miranda Arana, flute, whistle, and percussion.
Bob Green started dancing at the Pasadena Folk Dance Coop in the late 1950s. He became an avid contra dancer in the mid 1990s. He added English country dance just after the turn of the century, and began calling English and contra shortly thereafter. In addition to calling for English and contra dances, Bob teaches waltz and is the editor of the Dance Video Archives website. Bob also loves to choreograph, and has written over 40 contra and English county dances.
Ladies at Play are a high-spirited and musically adventurous contra dance and English country dance band from Oklahoma. Our repertoire includes a wide variety of folk and ballroom-like dance tunes, including jigs, reels, polkas, waltzes, hambos, English, old time, and zweifache. We also play our own spicy and cosmic original tunes, inspired by folk music traditions from around the world.
The Ladies will be joined by guest Martha Edwards on fiddle. Martha is a dancer, fiddler, caller, web designer and dance organizer. After 25 years as a classical violinist, she now plays only for dancing: for contra, English, waltzing, morris, and with the performance group Dance Discovery. She and her husband Bob Green host contra and English Calling Parties in their home, encouraging and developing new callers and dance writers.
